Arc Welding in a Nutshell

Arc welding is the process of using a source of electrical power to create an arc between a base material and an electrode. By using the power source to create enough heat to melt the particular metal, arc welders are then able to fuse two or pieces of metal together. This type of welding is very often used in a wide range of industrial processes and productions and there are in fact, several different types of welders available depending on the situation at hand.

The two most commonly used welding tools are a Gas Metal Welders and Flux-Core Welders.

Flux-core welders are usually used on stainless steels, low alloy steels, as well as nickel alloys. The process of flux-core welding involves in an arc welder fusing together metal by pointing the incredibly hot arc between a filler metal electrode and the metal in which they are trying to fuse. One of the disadvantages of using this type of tool is that can sometimes be difficult to be really precise when working and often the finished weld can contain some slag and splatter. However this sort of welder is perfect for use at home or when working on a car or other local situations where only a small level of fabrication or arc welding is required. Gas metal welders are another popular tool used by many in the welding industry as it allows the welder to be much more precise when they are working. This type of welder will most probably be handheld and easy to transport meaning it can be taken and used in a wide range of situations on a wide range of materials. However, it is mainly used for working on metals such as aluminium, stainless steel and magnesium, but can actually be used on most types of metals apart from zinc and lead. The standard of work produced when using this type of arc welder will undoubtedly be of high quality and the completed weld will often have an incredibly clean finish, with no slag or splatter. Because of this gas metal welders are perfect for working on large areas of car bodywork. There are now some arc welders available that provide both gas and non-gas welding as part of the same tool. Usually these come in the form of a flux-core welder that has a gas welder as an extra. This type of welder can be good to use if working on a wide variety of different metals.
